Don't forget now - TONIGHT is the last QOM of June! The amazing Daphne Gottlieb is featuring with special guest Sarah Katherine Lewis. The open mic sign up starts at 7:30 sharp and I say get there early this time as folks are getting ready to get their art on! Reading starts at 8:00. $1-$5 Donation requested, no one turned away for lack of funds. Remember - open mic readers can read one piece that's five minutes or less. Vince & Pete's Three Dollar Bill Cafe (in the LGBT Center) 1800 Market @ Octavia, San Francisco, CA From Cindy Emch, the founder of QOM who's passing on her hosting torch for awhile so she can focus on making her own art: Rock and roll folks. I couldn't be happier than to have Daphne, who was one of the absolute first features at QOM to share this last dance with me, and Mollena hosting with me - who came to my very first open mic reading in SF with me years ago. It's all kinda making me misty. Plus we're popping Sarah-Katherine's open mic reading cherry!!! This has been an amazing group of readers and regulars for a long time for me. It's like my own little SF Artsy Fartsy grad school and this will be my last show as I head off onto a band and muscial sabaatical. I hope you can be there. Please spread the word! 46664 is a number you may have heard. Four, double six, six four was Nelson Mandela's prison number when he was imprisoned on Robben Island, off Cape Town, for 27 years for leading the liberation movement against apartheid.
So, this symbolic number was chosen in the fight against HIV AIDS. This weekend, we prepare to honour the great man on his 90th birthday with the party of a lifetime - the 46664 concert - in London's Hyde Park. Simple Minds, Razorlight and Keane are all playing live and Will Smith is offering his services as MC.
Hear the full concert live and in full on Virgin Radio tonight from 6pm [10am here in San Francisco] with Russ Williams - one not to miss. [In addition to their website, you can also listen to Virgin Radio UK through the Radio list in iTunes (it's listed under Pop).] From the Virgin Radio website: Artists specially invited to perform for Mr. Mandela at the Friday night 90th birthday concert will include Queen + Paul Rodgers, Annie Lennox, Simple Minds, Leona Lewis, the Sugababes, Dame Shirley Bassey, Razorlight, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant, and Jamelia, along with international 46664 Ambassadors Italy’s Zucchero and Spain’s Amaral. [ Amy Winehouse is also scheduled to perform and did show up for rehearsals, but it's anyone's guess if she'll actually show up for the actual performance. (I adore her, but she's not the most reliable person these days.)] Concert proceeds will go to the 46664 campaign which raises awareness about the impact of AIDS, especially in Africa, and promotes effective HIV prevention measures throughout the world.ETA (8:54 am): Amy Winehouse also showed up for her sound check today, so it's looking promising. "Dirty" by Suzen JueL Suzen JueL a.k.a. JueL Resistance, is a self taught musician who has been performing since 1979. She has perfected the weaving of her mind's eye and heart's passion into lyrical paintings richly embedded with emotional hues from her personal experiences. Her lyrics feed the listener's soul and stirs the heart and sentiment of any who have been privileged to hear her perform them. Suzen "JueL" Resistance's creative roots are deeply entrenched in a family of french musicians, artists and writers. Her Grampa Jule made a guitar in 1967 that he later gave her when she showed a keen interest in music. With her newfound passion she began writing and playing at every opportunity. Her style and sound have been compared, both lyrically and vocally, to such legendary greats as Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Sue Foley, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Mazzy Star, Kurt Cobain as well as a generous handful of other talented acoustic musicians. As one of the first indie musicians to join and perform in Second Life, she has built a strong presence in the virtual world. A world where she is also known for her visual art work; her paintings, drawings and photography are displayed in various galleries throughout Second Life. To listen to and support JueL's music you can find her web presences at: http://www.thesixtyone.com/juelresistance/ [A lot of her music can be found here] http://www.myspace.com/7JuelYou can also hear her perform live in Second Life.
